How we choose

A book earns a place here when it has the marks of a living book — the qualities Charlotte Mason looked for. We hold every candidate up to the same six questions.

The six marks

You can run this test on any book yourself with our living-book checker.

How we vet

Nothing goes on the shelf until someone in our family has actually read it and written a real reflection — the note you see quoted at the top of each book's page. Any additional background we add is only ever supporting scaffold beneath that human voice, never a substitute for it. Where a book has cautions worth knowing, we say so plainly.

Our independence

Some links on this site are affiliate links — mostly to Bookshop.org, which supports independent bookstores, and sometimes to Amazon. If you buy through them we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. It never changes which books we recommend. When a book is free or your library has it, we would rather tell you that.
